Behind the Poem: Even if We Don’t Make It

We all enter relationships with hopes and expectations of everlasting love, but sometimes life has different plans. Connections come and go, some lasting only a season, a decade, or even a fleeting moment. As I reflect on the intricacies of human bonds, I am reminded that not all relationships are meant to endure. This realization inspired me to write a poem titled Even if We Don't Make It, which delves into the bittersweet reality of impermanence.

In a world where enduring love stories are revered, I find solace in the stories of elders who have experienced various paths to happiness. The ups and downs. Laughing at foolish moments that I’m sure they couldn’t find humor in when it happened. I have witnessed couples who have celebrated over three decades of marriage, and others who found their true soulmate after a couple of failed attempts. Surprisingly, there were even couples whom I believed would last a lifetime, only to see them transition into a profound friendship instead of remaining romantic partners. All of it is fine by me.

As I penned Even if We Don't Make It, I didn't intend to convey pessimism or lingering doubts. Instead, I sought to embrace the reality of life's uncertainties. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, relationships don't work out, or perhaps they were only meant to grace our lives for a certain period (I grew up hearing: Some people are for seasons, some people are for a lifetime. Be thankful for the time they were in your life regardless of the length). Yet, even in the face of potential separation, I believe in cherishing every moment and evolving together towards a shared goal of growing old as sexy cocoa butta-smellin-deep voice havin-shuffle-foot walkin’ companions. I envision us sitting on a porch, hand in hand, sorting freshly snatched greens from our garden.

However, if our journey doesn't culminate in a lifetime commitment, I refuse to harbor regrets. Our shared experiences, the highs and lows, the adventures and bickering, the laughter and tears, the travels and intimate nights, the gentle mornings—each moment will be treasured. I draw inspiration from Alice Walker, who described her relationship with Tracy Chapman, during an interview “And it was delicious and lovely and wonderful.”   I, too, find our connection to be deliciously fulfilling. And let's not forget: I think they have the best smile in the world (you’ll notice that in Orange September. Lol)

Regardless of the outcome, I will always hold our memories dear.

Here’s an excerpt:

Separation or not,
it’s a story I’ll smile softly to, while a summer breeze whizzes between my dentures.
Bones brittle but content to have the chance to roam the land with you for a spell.
— Orange September By Jasmine Farrell

Even if We Don't Make It shares the beauty found within the impermanence of relationships. It reminds us to honor the journey, appreciate the moments shared and the lessons learned. Whether our story unfolds into a lifelong partnership or takes a different path, I am grateful for the delicious experiences we've had. For in the end, it's the sweetness of our connection that truly matters, leaving an indelible mark on my soul.
